Our neighbours

We aim to be good neighbours in the communities where we operate. This means more than running our operations cleanly and safely: it also means working with people close to our operations to address their concerns and help them benefit from our activities.

This includes buying and hiring locally, and supporting social investment programmes.

Social investment

We support community development projects directly, as well as indirectly through the independent Shell Foundation. Our aim is to work with communities to understand local needs and address social or economic issues relevant to our business, such as access to energy, enterprise development and road safety. Many of the programmes we support aim to be self-sustaining, for example, by helping young people to set up businesses or providing job training. Our staff contribute by volunteering on social and environmental projects around the world.

To help improve access to modern energy among low-income households, we helped found the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, a public-private partnership that aims to help 100 million homes worldwide adopt clean cooking solutions by 2020.

How we do business

The Shell General Business Principles - opens on Shell.com include our support for fundamental human rights in line with the legitimate role of business. We aim to work with integrity, even as the search for oil and gas takes us into challenging locations and politically sensitive countries. We pay taxes and royalties to the governments of countries where we operate, and these are often their main source of revenue.

Human rights

Our Business Principles include our aim to respect the human rights of our employees and support fundamental human rights in line with the legitimate role of business. We also work with others to support international efforts to improve understanding of the relationship between business and human rights.


Our company-wide HIV/AIDS programme states we do not discriminate against anyone affected by HIV/AIDS. We also help to provide treatment for employees affected by HIV/AIDS. In partnership with other companies and organisations we work to raise awareness and support efforts to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS in the communities where we operate.

Around 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, according to UNAIDS. Since the beginning of the epidemic, about 30 million people have died of HIV related causes. This global epidemic affects our employees, contractors, suppliers and customers and impacts on our business environment. We are taking steps to protect our employees and their families from HIV/AIDS, to care for those infected, and are working with partners to fight the spread of HIV.

Our HIV/AIDS programme

Our company-wide HIV/AIDS programme states that we will not discriminate against anyone affected by HIV/AIDS. The programme also includes providing or arranging medical treatment for employees affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as participating in education and prevention programmes for employees, their families and communities.

We aim to create ongoing partnerships with relevant local and global organisations and other companies to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic together in the communities where we operate and sell our products and services. We include HIV/AIDS in our impact assessments and have a monitoring programme in place to measure the progress of our efforts.

Working with partners

We belong to existing global partnerships and develop local partnerships in the regions and countries where we operate.

Our global partnerships to fight HIV/AIDS include:

UNAIDS scenarios development: We shared our scenario expertise to help understand and address the challenge of AIDS in Africa over the next 20 years, in partnership with UNAIDS.

We developed three possible scenarios which demonstrate the need for everyone to work together in tackling the challenges.

The project documents and material are available through the UNAIDS website.

Global business coalition on Health (GBC Health): Over 200 companies – including Shell – are working together to help combat the AIDS epidemic.

The coalition, for example, uses an interactive company case studies database to share of learning and best practice.
