The Challenge

India’s education system faces challenges in preparing students for today’s workforce:

Only 44.8% of Grade 5 students can read at a Grade 2 level.

Just 30.7% can do basic arithmetic. (ASER 2024)

In higher education, only 3.84% of engineering graduates are employable in software roles at start-ups.

Overall, only 45.9% of Indian youth are considered employable. (India Skills Report 2022)

These numbers reveal a critical gap in problem-solving and critical thinking skills- both essential for a modern economy.

What is NXplorers?

NXplorers is Shell’s global flagship STEM education program that helps students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. It connects classroom learning with real-world application, giving young people the confidence to create solutions for global challenges.

Through NXplorers, students learn to:

Since 2018, NXplorers, run in partnership with Learning Links Foundation and SMILE Foundation, has reached:

400,000+ students

2,500+ schools across Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala

In 2024–25, we aim to impact 100,000 more students.

NXplorers Highlights

Here’s how NXplorers is making an impact across India

April 2024: Shell India completed the first phase of its Teacher Support Model (TSM) in 100+ schools, in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission and NITI Aayog.

TSM empowers government teachers to deliver the NXplorers program effectively.

By March 2025, 564 teachers across 254 ATL schools have reached 37,000+ students.

September 2024: At Shell Changemakers of Tomorrow in Bangalore, 10 student teams showcased innovative solutions for Food, Energy, and Water challenges. Guests included Karnataka’s Education Minister and the British Deputy High Commissioner, who praised the students’ efforts.

December 2024: At IIT Bombay Tech Fest, an NXplorers project “Eco-Leather” won 2nd place out of 1,200 entries, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional leather.

A 15-year-old student from Karnataka developed an Agri Sprayer that improves farmer safety and saves energy. Recognized by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, she received a cash prize and certificate.
